Different Seasons

Different Seasons can bring changes to our lives. They can often be sad and painful, but we can also try to see them as inspiring and a chance for a new start.

When someone leaves, there’s always that part of us that refuses to forget. Even when the memories bring tears to our eyes, we still find ourselves reminiscing, holding on to every single moment and every single piece of photograph that we can hold on to. The song Different Seasons said it most aptly.

There is a face deep in your mind
One that your heart won’t leave behind
Memories are cold-empty of laughs
All that remains are photographs

As the pain lingers, we feel as if we can no longer keep ourselves together. Everywhere we turn, we only sense emptiness and hopelessness. We try to hold back the tears but in doing so, the pain becomes stronger, and the fear inside us grows bigger, This only keeps us from moving forward, even as that inner voice tells us to hold on tight.

There is a voice deep in your soul
Telling you not to lose control
And day after day you hold back the tears
Pain is the greatest of your fear

Just like the seasons that constantly change, people will eventually realize that they need to make plans if they want to improve their present lot. Unfortunately, this could also mean leaving behind those they have once loved and cherished.

Yes, it can mean hurting the people close to our hearts, but that’s how life is. It can be cruel at times, just like the seasons which won’t always bring calmness, but storms and destruction. The message of Different Seasons mirrors this.

When she’s gone there are no reasons
Nature’s cruel – it’s just different seasons
Going on and on

Can we blame the seasons for our present woes? No, not really, but we can refer to them when major changes take place in our lives and we have a hard time trying to make the needed adjustments. Listen to Johnny Hates Jazz and their message in Different Seasons. Please click here:

The British band Johnny Hates Jazz performed and recorded Different Seasons in 1988. The song is the eighth track in the band’s debut album entitled Turn Back the Clock.

Different Seasons apparently did not land a spot in major music charts, but the album was a big success. It was number one in the albums chart in the UK while Billboard’s 200 ranked the song at 56th place.

As to how Johnny Hates Jazz got its name, the group said they all love jazz but none of their members are named Johnny. Lead vocalist Clark Datchler explained that Johnny refers to his brother-in-law who hates jazz music even as his wife (Clark’s sister) is a certified jazz lover. Clark said they came up with the band’s name when they were visiting the couple
