I’m Through With Love

When love breaks you, anything that reminds you of the past is put away. Photographs are hidden and the radio is turned off. Yet, when night falls and you lie alone in bed, you find that the memories are still alive.

I put away your photograph
And turn out all the lights
But I can’t seem to make myself forget
‘Cause every time I close my eyes
And see your face again
I realize that’s all that I have left

You look back at what you had, and thought that it would last. But in the end, you realize that when you needed company, you find your arms cold and empty.

I thought that what we had was real
But maybe I’m a fool
Who only sees the things he wants to see
‘Cause it seems that when I need you most
I find myself alone
And I know that’s not the way love’s supposed to be

When the pain becomes overwhelming and unbearable, you know that things can never be the same. Bidding love adieu will always be much better.

I’m through with love
I’m through with pain
Don’t want to feel that way again
‘Cause if you’re gone for good
I’ll never be the same

Love may bring joy, even ecstasy, but these feelings are often fleeting. From the heights of happiness, love will betray you, pull you down, and bring you so low you will not want to be in love ever again. Even if, in time, your broken heart gets healed, you know that you can never be whole again.

I’m through with love
And sad goodbyes
Can’t take the lows
Don’t want those highs
This heart needs time to mend
‘Cause if we’ve reached the end
Till I can feel again
I’m through with love, my friend

“I’m Through with Love” formed part of singer-songwriter Eric Carmen’s second self-titled album released in 1985. The song served as a follow-up to “I Wanna Hear It from You Lips”, which was considered as Carmen’s comeback hit after a four-year music hiatus.

“I’m Through with Love” fared modestly in the charts. It landed a spot in Billboard’s Hot 100 and in the Top 20 of the Adult Contemporary  division, but no further details were provided.
