Out Here On My Own

Sometimes, when we’re all alone, we often ask ourselves where we’re going in our lives. We think we have achieved so many things, but in the back of our minds, we wonder if it’s all just our imagination. We still find ourselves struggling to fit in.

Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
Make believein’ is hard alone,
Out here on my own.

We always want to prove something, both to ourselves and to the world at large. We work hard to reach for the stars and picture ourselves shining brighter than them.

We’re always provin’ who we are,
Always reachin’
For that risin’ star
To guide me far
And shine me home,
Out here on my own.

Yet, it’s never easy getting to the top. We cry endless and unspoken tears for every failure, great and small, but we try our best never to let them show in front of others.

Until the morning sun appears
Making light
Of all my fears,
I dry the tears
I’ve never shown,
Out here on my own.

In the end, we may not succeed in life and may even end up having nothing to show. Still, in that tiny little space somewhere in our hearts, we have our own little world where we can run to and take refuge. There, we are free and safe from harm.

Sometimes I wonder where I’ve been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
I may not win,
But I can’t be thrown,
Out here on my own,

Lifted from the 1980 musical movie Fame and from the film’s album soundtrack, “Out Here on My Own” was originally performed and recorded by the late singer-songwriter Irene Cara. The song captured the 19th spot in Billboard’s Hot 100 and settled for the 20th place in the Adult Contemporary chart.

“Out Here on My Own” set a record in the 1981 Academy Awards by becoming one of two songs in one movie to be nominated for Best Original Song. The other one was Fame. Irene performed the song during the awards night.

Last November, Irene passed away in her Florida home, but the cause of her death was not disclosed.
