How Deep Is Your Love

Last Monday, my two teenage daughters were doing the laundry and as part of their ritual, they turned on the music app in their smartphones. The music they listen to are mostly K-pop, but after a while, there was a sudden silence. Then after about a minute, “How Deep Is Your Love” came out playing from my eldest daughter’s smartphone.

It came as a surprise to me that my two teenagers would listen to “How Deep Is Your Love“, a song that I grew up with. I have come to know them as lovers of upbeat tunes, and not of love songs that tell of a love sincere and true, the type that you want to feel when you wake up each morning or comfort you when life brings in the rains.

I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again

We all fall in love and I know that my daughters are not exceptions. As teenagers, I’m aware that they have their own little secrets, especially about love and all the wonderful things that come with the feeling.

I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You’re my savior when I fall
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do

It’s a scary feeling, this idea that my two teenagers have come to know about the beauty of love and yet have not really fully grasped its mysterious and often dark side. But right now, all I can do is watch quietly from the sidelines, and let them experience the excitement and thrill that love initially brings.

We live in a cruel world where love can either make or break us, but in the end, it will come down to personal decisions. We just have to live and let live, allowing ourselves and other people to show how far we’re willing to go in the name of love.

How deep is your love?
I really mean to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

Falling in love is both mysterious and overwhelming but love songs like “How Deep Is Your Love” can make it more enduring. Listen to this song as originally performed by the Bee Gees. Please click here:

Released as a single in September 1977, “How Deep Is Your Love” was written and performed by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb who formed the trio Bee Gees. The song eventually became part of the soundtrack for the movie Saturday Night Fever where several other Bee Gees songs were featured.

“On Christmas Day that year, “How Deep Is Your Love” was recorded as the number one song in Billboard’s Hot 100. It stayed in the top ten position for over four months, and was a Grammy awardee the following year, capturing the Best Pop Performance by a Group category.
