Somebody

We all need somebody to be with us. Someone with whom we can share practically everything, from our tiniest secrets to our gravest sins. Someone who will support us on the things we believe in and has her own set of beliefs that we can support as well.

I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details

Someone who’ll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She’ll get my support

We may have different views about life, at times, these may even sound absurd. Yet, that someone will listen to us and though she may not agree to what we believe in, at the end of the day, she will understand us.

Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She’ll hear me out
And won’t easily be converted

To my way of thinking
In fact, she’ll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me

Even as we hold on to our ideals, we also want that someone to lead us to new things and help us to become open to the unknown. And when things hardly come out the way we want them to, we want that someone to soothe our wounded pride and calm us down.

Someone who’ll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like

But when I’m asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly

“Somebody” is also Depeche Mode’s first double-A single with the flip side featuring the song “Blasphemous Rumours” which tells the story of a failed suicide by a teenage girl. The planned release of this single received negative criticism from various sectors . As a compromise, the band released “Blasphemous Rumours” as a double-A single, with “Somebody” serving as the other half. Nevertheless, when Depeche Mode recorded “Somebody”, vocalist Martin Gore was said to have sang it while nude.
