I’d Rather

In life, we sometimes make decisions that we believe is wise. Love is a perfect example. We break up with someone because we feel that we need more space, only to realize later on that it was a big mistake.

I thought sometime alone
Was what we really needed
You said this time would hurt more than it helps
But I couldn’t see that

So we get the space that we needed, and for a while, it seemed good. We are free to pursue our interests, stay out late at night, and if we wish, get out of bed in the afternoon and enjoy a hearty brunch.

I thought it was the end
Of a beautiful story
And so I left the one I loved at home to be alone

Eventually, we get tired of being on our own. We begin mingling anew until we get to meet someone whom we feel is the right one. We start spending time with this someone, having a good laugh or two, and just basically enjoying one another’s company.

And then I met someone
And thought she could replace you
We got a long just fine
We wasted time because she was not you

Yet, we feel that something was not right. Yes, there was the expected thrill and excitement, but there was something missing. Call it an incomplete connection, a lost link, a missing union.

We had a lot of fun
Though we knew we were faking
Love was not impressed with our connection they were all lies

We then realize that we’re missing the one we left behind. It’s with this someone that we find life meaningful, even if at times problems and issues never seem to run out. Through good and bad times, in both sunny and stormy days, we would rather be with the one we truly love than to be alone or with somebody else.

I know better now
And I’ve had a change of heart
I’d rather have bad times with you, than good times with someone else
I’d rather be beside you in a storm, than safe and warm by myself
I’d rather have hard times together, than to have it easy apart
I’d rather have the one who holds my heart

Have you left someone behind only to realize that he/she is the one you’ve always wanted to be with? Take a cue from Luther Vandross’ song “I’d Rather”. Please click here:

The late singer-songwriter Luther Vandross recorded”I’d Rather” as part of his 12th and self-titled album released in 2001. The song, released as the third and last single from the album, hit number one in Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs and was also among the top 20 hits in the Adult Contemporary category.

Vandross has made numerous hits and has been known as “The Velvet Voice. Additionally, he received various music recognitions, the last of which was at the 2004 Grammy Awards, where his song, “Dance with My Father” was named Song of the Year. About a year after receiving the award, Vandross passed away after suffering from a heart attack.
