Kyrie

About three weeks ago, the Christian world celebrated Resurrection Sunday, or the day when Jesus rose from the dead. As in many Sunday masses, Kyrie was among the songs that were sung in most churches.

Of course, this song is different from the one I’m referring to which is a pop song performed by Mr. Mister. Nevertheless, the message of these two songs are basically the same, that is, asking for God’s mercy.

Kyrie

They say life is a journey, and as we seek to complete it, we encounter pain and heartache, and create a myriad of memories that we hold dear. In between, we work hard to make a living, find inspiration to move forward, and find rest for our tired soul.

My heart is old, it holds my memories
My body burns a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again

As we continue with this journey, we often wonder when it will end and how. We look back and see how far we have come and how much or how little we have achieved in life. Ultimately, we find ourselves asking if we have truly followed what was destined for us or merely wished that we did.

When I was young, I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be?

Amidst all the frustrations and doubts, we find His mercy and love comforting. We realize that in Him, we will discover the strength to carry on. Even in the darkest of roads, He will shine a light if we ask for it with all our heart.

Kyrie Eleison down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison where I’m going, will you follow?
Kyrie Eleison on a highway in the night

Lifted from the pop rock group Mr. Mister’s late 1985 album Welcome to the Real World, “Kyrie” hit the number one spot in Billboard’s Hot 100 early the following year. The song kept the position for two weeks even as it also captured the top spot in Billboard’s Top Rock Tracks.

Kyrie comes from the Greek word kyrios which means “Lord” and when “Kyrie” the song was released, rumors spread that it was written by Mr. Mister’s lead vocalist Richard Page following his hospitalization after getting assaulted; he subsequently referred to the song as essentially “a prayer.” Kyrie is short for “Kyrie, eleison”, a liturgical hymn sung in many Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches and translated as “Lord, have mercy.”

However, John Lang, who wrote the song’s lyrics, clarified that it was he who was attacked and that he came up with the lyrics three years before the incident. Richard Page, meanwhile, wrote the music for “Kyrie” along with band member Steve George.
