Handy Man

When a heart gets broken, how do you repair it? The saying “time heals all wounds” may be true in many cases, but is there some other way? What if there’s a job out there that actually wors on repairing broken hearts?

James Taylor offered this type of service when he sang “Handy Man”. Here’s how describes the work he does.

I’m not the kind that use a pencil or rule
I’m handy with love but I’m no fool
I fix broken hearts, I know but I truly can

So how does it go? What technique is used to fix a broken heart? James gives more details in the following lines:

If your broken heart should need repair
Then I am the man to see
I whisper sweet things
You tell all your friends
They’ll come running to me

Can a real person really have the power to repair a broken heart? Maybe, but if a handyman for broken hearts does exist, it’s best to heed the following advice:

Here is the main thing that I want to say
I’m busy 24 hours a day
I fix broken hearts
I know but I truly can

In need of repair for a heart that just got broken, listen to the “Handy Man” here:

“Handy Man” was written by Jimmy Jones and Otis Blackwell and originally recorded by Jones’ former group The Sparks of Rhythm but Jones was excluded. In 1959, Jones recorded his own version of “Handy Man” which became a hit. Del Shannon repeated the feat in 1964 when he did a cover of the song.

James Taylor’s version of “Handy Man” in 1977 was likewise a hit but is considered the most successful. It topped the RPM Top Singles Chart and Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart. James’ rendition of the song also landed at second place in Cash Box’s Top 100 chart and was at fourth spot in Billboard’s Hot 100. Ultimately, this earned for James a second Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
