Summertime is always a fun time. The experiences that come with the season are varied but at the same time unforgettable. That’s what this song from Bryan Adams is all about and some of the lines here were actually inspired by true events.
Adams composed the song along with Jim Vallance. During their high school days, the two put up a band that eventually broke up. In the song, Adams mentioned a guy named Jody and he was actually referring to his sound man Jody Perpik who tied the knot just when they were putting “Summer of ’69” together.
Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit, Jody got married
I should’ve known we’d never get far
Summer love may be short-lived, but it’s often hot and passionate as the song implies. For this reason, many lovers refer to their summer experience as long-lasting.
Standin’ on your mama’s porch
You told me that you’d wait forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Since summer is also about having fun, it’s the perfect time to take up a hobby. In “Summer of ’69”, Adam talked about learning to play the guitar.
I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it ’til my fingers bled
Was the summer of sixty-nine
Yes, summer means many things to different people. Yet, one thing remains unchanged — it’s always the best days of one’s life. As we grow up, we’ll always look back to those days and wish we could back and experience them all again.
Oh, when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I’d always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life
