We welcome the month of March with a blog series that focuses on songs that have women as subjects. March, in case you don’t know, is celebrated as International Women’s Month.
We begin by looking into an original Billy Joel song. For me, this is one of the best songs ever written for and about a woman. Bily Joel actually wrote this for Elizabeth, his first wife. It perfectly captures the complexity and the perplexity that a woman posessess, her ever-changing moods, and her often misunderstood emotions.
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth, but she’ll never believe.
She’ll take what you give her as long as it’s free
“She’s Always a Woman” is also a song acknowledging a woman’s tremendous powers. A power that can either lead you to a question your beliefs or move you to discover your untapped potentials
She can kill with her smile, she can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
She’ll promise you more than the garden of Eden
She can carelessly cut you and laugh while you’re pleading
But she’ll bring out the best and the worst you can be
Through all of her imperfections, a woman is never a quitter. As Billy Joel said it, “she never gives out, and she never gives in, she just changes her mind”.
Listen to the entire song here and feel proud of being a woman, For the guys, let’s be proud of the women who became part of our lives.
