What’s Forever For

An unknown writer once said, “Love is forever between two hearts that share it”. In some ways, that may be true, but with the changing of times and as our connections expand, love tends to become less of a priority in our lives. Expectedly, we begin to find ourselves engrossed in other things.

I’ve been looking at people
And how they’ve changed with the times

And lately all I’ve been seeing are people
Throwing love away and losing their minds

With love diminished, hurting the people close to our hearts becomes the norm rather than an exception. We readily get into petty fights with them that eventually turn serious. Then finally, we think of calling it quits without considering the good times that were once shared and celebrated.

Maybe it’s me who’s gone crazy
But I can’t understand why
All these lovers keep hurting each other
When good love is so hard to come by

Some of us decide to stay in the affair but would often find the company of others more enjoyable. We spend more time with these people, trying to find in them the love we feel we have lost; yet, at the end of the day, we return to a broken home that we refuse to repair.

And I see love-hungry people
Trying their best to survive
When righ there in their hands is a dying romance
And they’re not even trying to keep it alive

Break-ups and estrangement are not exacly alien to us. They have been with us since we learned to love. Even the most formidable of relationships go through painful trials that sometimes lead to downfall.

Still, one of the greatest joys in life is falling in love but an even greater joy is seeing that love last through all eternity. If it doesn’t, then how else should we use the word “forever”?

So what’s the glory in living?
Doesn’t anybody ever stay together anymore?
And if love never lasts forever, tell me
What’s forever for?

Has your love affair been put to a great and heart-breaking test? If so, how did you handle it? Find inspiration in Michael Martin Murphey’s “What’s Forever For”. Please click here:

“What’s Forever For” is a 1979 song originally performed and recorded by England Dan & John Ford Coley and included in their Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive album. However, it was the cover version of country singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey that made the song a big hit.

Murphey’s rendition, released in 1982, topped the country top 40 charts and landed at 19th place in Billboard’s Hot 100. The song is featured as the second track in Murphey’s self-titled album released in the same year.
