Sweet Baby

When the one you love has left you, it’s natural to reminisce about the past. Memories, good and bad, flood your mind, making you laugh and cry almost at the same time. At times, you even have the notion that it was never over, only put off for the time being.

When I think about your loving
The Sunday evenings
The fun we used to share
Looking through the memories
In my mind
Since I’ve laughed and cried
And thought it over
Now I realized
That it’s never over
Only set aside

Your mind keeps wandering and yet your focus is on the past. You think of the love that you once had, how it ended up the way it did, and you wonder if you can ever find it again.

My mind keeps wandering
My thoughts are only you
Wandering through the
Memories in my mind
How could love so real
Have gone so empty
I just keep wondering why
Will I ever find the love
We shared together, you and I

You end up longing for that gentle touch, that tender kiss, and that warm embrace. And you realize that you can never ever be free, because in your heart, you are earnestly hoping that it’s not yet too late to give love one more try. And so, you await on the side.

Oh, it’s you, sweet baby
I will never be free
From your embrace, sweet baby
Only hoping it’s not
Too late to try again
It’s you, sweet baby
Ever always been captured
By your smile, sweet baby
I will always be right
There by your side
Right by your side

Musicians Stanley Clarke and George Duke performed and recorded “Sweet Baby” in 1981 as part of a collaboration project. The work led to a debut album for the two aptly entitled “The Clarke/Duke Project” where the song served as the initial track.

“Sweet Baby” landed at #19 in Billboard’s Hot 100. It also stayed in the US music charts for five full months
