I remember this song playing on the radio one ordinary day during my teenage years. It was a late Thursday afternoon, the day was almost done, but a thunderstorm was brewing outside.
Midway through the song, the rains started to pour, accompanied by deafening thunder and the criss-cross of ligthning ripping through the dark-lit sky. Within minutes, the power went out and everything was placed in darkness.
The song contiued to play in my mind though, but back then, I hardly understood what it was about. Hearing the song again a few days ago, I realized that it actually talked of a relationship on the verge of falling apart and how this could be so difficult to understand.
Here I am
Alone and I don’t understand
Exactly how it all began
The dream just walked away
We try our best to hold on, especially when we know that the feelings are still there. Eventually, we realize that perhaps we are trying too hard to make the relationship work.
And from the start
Maybe I was tryin’ too hard
It’s crazy ’cause it’s breakin’ my heart
We are often unaware, but there’s always a lesson waiting to be learned in everything and this ultimately allows us to grow.
And here was I
When they ignore the cause inside
But they learned from what’s left behind
And fight for something else
And so it goes
That we have both learned how to grow
We may have differences so great and overwhelming that we sometimes opt to simply drift away. Yet, when everything else is taken into account, we surrender to the fact that we don’t want that someone to just walk out of our lives.
It’s crazy ’cause it’s breakin’ our hearts
Things can fall apart, but I know
That I don’t want you to go
Can you afford that someone to walk out the door despite all the things the two of you have gone through? Listen to the message of “I Don’t Want You To Go” as rendered by Lani Hall. Please click here:
“I Don’t Want You To Go” was originally part of singer Lani Hall’s 1980 album Blush. Three years later, Lani’s husband, trumpeteer Herb Alpert, made a few changes on the song, with Lani eventually releasing this both as a single and as one of the tracks in her 1983 album Collectibles.
Co-written by Ailee Willis and Bruce Roberts, “I Don’t Want You To Go” has been covered by several artists. This included La Toya Jackson whose version of the song was included in her 1981 album My Special Love.
