Pilot of the Airwaves

My ultimate dream job is to become a radio disc jockey or DJ. I’ve always seen it as a fun and enjoyable way of making a living. As a music lover, becoming a radio DJ allows me to do something that I genuinely enjoy.

I don’t mind being all alone in a booth and surrounded by stacks of records, albums, CDs, and all those other stuff that you need to run a radio station. As long as I get to play songs that people love to listen to, I’ll be just fine.

Pilot of the airwaves
Here is my request
You don’t have to play it
But I hope you’ll do your best

One nice thing about being a radio DJ is that you don’t need to worry about how you look while on the job. Unlike today, the early disc jocks need to have a good sounding voice if they want to be in radio. It’s their way of getting the attention of listeners who eventually become their audience.

Ooooh, you make the nighttime race
Ooooh, I don’t need to see your face
You’re sounding good (Sounding good)
Sounding good to me

By getting to hear the songs that they love to listen to, people eventually come to see the DJ as a friend. They begin to see him or her as someone who somehow understands them, especially when the DJ plays a song that describes just how they feel at that particular moment.

I’ve been listening to your show
On the radio
And you seem like a friend to me

Sadly, I didn’t end up living my dream job. I’ve been to different radio stations trying to get in as a DJ but I just couldn’t make the grade. In short, until now, I’m still just an avid radio listener, waiting for my favoite song to be played on the air.

Or a record of your choice
I don’t mind, I’d be happy just to hear your voice
Saying this is for the girl
Who didn’t sign her name
Yes, she needs a dedication just the same

Interested in having a DJ as a friend? Listen to “Pilot of the Airwaves” and consider the possibility. Click here:

English singer-songwriter Charlie Dore sang and recorded “Pilot of the Airwaves” in 1979 as part of the album Where To Now”. The song hit 13th place in Billboard’s Hot 100 while also landing a spot in the music charts of Australia and Canada. With its strong showing, “Pilot of the Airwaves” earned for Dore the New Female Artist of the Tear award from Record World.

Trivia:Many radio DJ’s often adopt code names ot aliases when they go on air for their radio shows. Not surprisingly, one DJ actually goes by the monicker “the pilot”, although it’s highly unlikely that he’s the DJ being referred to in the song “Pilot of the Airwaves”.
