Feeling nostalgic (yes, it hits me every now and then) so I decided to browse through a couple of songs. This one, “Child For A Day”, came up on my search list and its message brought back memories of childhood.
The song is by Cat Stevens and it talks about the joys of being a child. It speaks of the beauty of the sunshine and how it brings a smile to the innocent. The song describes how little ones look up to their elders and listen to their words.
We were the children
Who sang in the morning
We were the children
Who laughed at the sun
Who listened to those who spoke with their wisdom
Sadly, as we grow up and become adults, we lose the innocence of childhood. We become older with the passing of days, ultimately abandoning the child that lives within.
We’re getting older as time goes by
A little older with everyday
We were the children of yesterday
With hesitation, we become men, unafraid and yet struggling without direction. We stop listening to sound advice and yet speak as if we have the wisdom that comes with age.
We are the men who worry of nothing
We are the men who fight without aim
We listen to no one, yet speak of our wisdom
When life’s frustrations set in, we long for those days when we were children. We look back to those times when we had no worries and when laughter comes from the simplest of things. That’s when we realize that childhood seems to have lasted for just a day.
I was a child
Who ran full of laughter
I was a child who lived for today
My eyes full of sunshine
My heart full of smiles
I was a child for a day
Join Cat Stevens as he sings about lost childhood here:
Cat Stevens is a British singer-songwriter who was quite famous in the late 60s and early 70s. Some of the songs credited to his name are “Father and Son”, “Wild World”, and “Morning Has Broken”. The song “Child For A Day” was from Cat’s ISITSO album and was co-written by David Gordon (Cat Steven’s brother) and Paul Travis. It served as the theme of “First Love”, a 1977 movie that starred William Katt and Susan Dey.
Cat Stevens is now known as Yusuf Islam after converting to Islam in late 1977. Two years later, he performed for a UNICEF charity concert in celebration of the International Year of the Child. Here he played “Child For A Day” along with his brother David, Alun Davies, and David Essex. In 2014, Cat Stevens was among those inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
