Mind Over Matters of the Heart

It’s a habit that you’ve learned to do every hour, every day, every week, every month, year in and year out. A bad practice you should have not engaged in. Yet, you did because no matter how hard you try, your broken heart refuses to heal.

Waking up with my head in a cloud watching the morning come
Another day of the week in a month, in a year, in a life that’s come undone
I might as well quit trying to get you off my mind
I might as well quit hoping that this heart will heal in time

Each day presents an opportunity to leave the past behind, to look forward to a brighter future. Sadly, an inner voice calls you back, asking you to stay even when it hurts, and for some strange reason, you gladly give in.

Everyday there’s another attempt to convince myself you’re gone
Every night there’s a promise I make that tomorrow I’ll move on
But there’s a voice inside me that calls your name out loud
A part of me still hopes to see your face in every crowd

Eventually, you come to realize that there’s simply no way you can turn away from the pain of a heartbreak. It’s something you have to face, accept, and embrace. It’s a long and lonely road that you’ll have to take, but in time, the mind will give in once it senses that the heart has to complete the journey to healing on its own.

Cause I can’t burn a bridge that I’m still crossing
And I can’t lose a past that I’m still lost in
I can tell myself it’s over and I need a brand new start
But there’s no such thing as mind over matters of the heart

“Mind Over Matters of the Heart” is the third track in country music band Restless Heart’s sixth album, Matters of the Heart, released in 1994. The song was not released as a single, with “Baby Needs New Shoes” as the only featured album track.

The 1994 album was significant for Restless Heart as it was the first one released a year after long-time band keyboardist Dave Innis left the group.
