Sometimes, love is not what it appears to be. Behind a sweet and seemingly innocent smile is a plan to control and manipulate. When we come to realize this, a painful decision often has to be made.
I guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
Now I’ve come to my decision
And it’s a one of the painful kind
We realize that while there are happy moments in the relationship, there are also days of disappointments. And often, the heartaches overweigh the joys.
You really gotta hand it to ya
‘Cause girl you really tried
But for every time that we spent laughin’
There were two times that I cried
We learn that change is always a given and even the people we shared beautiful memories with will end up hurting us.
‘Cause tables are meant for turnin’
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin’
When the people and memories
They join aren’t the same
So we let them go, wish them luck, and hope they can find another one who can give them what they need and give in to what they want.
But I hope that you can find another
Who can take what I could not
He’ll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
Love may not always be a bed of roses, and at times, there’s a need to sacrifice to make it last. Stiil, it does not mean that love should be a burden or a cross too heavy to carry. True love should give inspiration, not expiration.
‘Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain’t ’bout to start nothin’ new
And baby, I can’t hang upon no lover’s cross for you
“Lover’s Cross” is the second track in “I Got a Name,” the fifth and last album of singer-songwrier Jim Croce. The album was released posthumously in December, 1973, about two months after Croce died in a plane crash.
“Lover’s Cross” did not enter the music chart but the album from where it was lifted reached number 10 in the US Singles chart. The song “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song”, from the same album captured the ninth spot, two major recognitions Croce received after his death.
