The problem with being told that a relationship is over is that the pain is sometimes a bit slow to sink in. We end up saying that we understand what is going on without fully grasping what it means.
Sure I understand
Of course, I’ll be fine
You had to change your plans,
Oh well, I’ll just change mine
When we come to realize that it’s really happening, then we cling to a desperate hope that it was all just a mistake and the one we hold dear will eventually return to our waiting arms.
But if it turns out bad
And if your nights get long
And if she makes you sad
No need, to be strong
Yet, if the feeling has changed, then we put up a strong face, accept the painful decision, and try to walk away calmly.
I guess I’d better go
You know I hate goodbyes
Let’s not drag this out babe
I’ll see ya ’round sometime
We ask them to just leave without looking back. We tell ourselves that like all things in life, this heartache will soon go away.
Go, don’t look back
Let the heartache pass
Still, in the back of our mind, there is this silent prayer that one day, things will go back to where they were before. And when they do, we will be waiting with open arms, believing that in some strange way, love will be rekindled somewhere in that magical place in time.
And if you ever change your mind
Some magic place in time
If you ever change your mind
Brenda Gail Webb, more popularly known as Crystal Gayle, recorded “If You Ever Change Your Mind” in 1980. Released as the first track from her album “These Days,” the song was number one in Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and registered at number 18 in the Adult Contemporary chart. It was also nominated at the 1981 Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Gayle, known for her signature floor-length black hair, is one of the earliest American female country singers who successfully transitioned to the pop music genre. “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” recorded in 1977, is widely considered as her crossover song.
