One hard part of ending a relationship is how and when to say it. Many times, we put up a smile to create the illusion that the feelings are still strong, but when love is gone, the pretension will be conspicuous.
Did you think that your smile
Could hide what’s on your mind?
No matter how I tried
I just couldn’t be so blind
In a world where we are presented with myriad of opportunities, change becomes inevitable. It can lead to personal growth, and while this is good, it can also cause us to grow away and apart from the one we care for as our heart begins to feel the change.
We’ve been close but people grow
And they sometimes grow apart
There’s just one thing I ask you
If you’ve had a change of heart
Breaking up is never easy, especially when we don’t want to let go. Yet, when it becomes the only option, doing it gently can make the acceptance a bit less bitter.
But I won’t hold you back
There’ll be no pulling on your sleeve
Just let me down easy
And go softly when you leave
Telling a lie can mask the pain and ease the pride broken after saying goodbye. It’s the softer way of sparing the remaining feelings that refuse to die.
Break it to me gently
If you have to, then tell me lies
Break it to me gently
At least leave me with my pride
Try to spare my feelings
If the feelings have to die
Break it to me gently
If you have to say goodbye
Singer-songwriter Angela Bofill performed and recorded ‘Break It to Me Gently’ in late 1981 as the third track of her album ‘Something About You.’ The song was released as a single the following year.
Angela’s career lasted for more than four decades during which she had several hits,. ‘Break It to Me Gently’ is considered by many as her most popular song.
