Love is a lot like a sharp knife. Sooner or later, it will cut , and it will cut badly. Often, it will be so bad that you will doubt if you could ever give your heart again to someone else.
I would have given you all of my heart
But there’s someone who’s torn it apart
And she’s taken just all that I had
You could eventually meet someone new. Someone totally different, one who can ease the pain that you’re carrying or dry the tears in your eyes. A new love that you will want to stay by your side so your sorrow can turn to joy.
I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I’ve cried
And I’m sure gonna give you a try
And if you want, I’ll try to love again
Yet, in a corner of your heart, the pain lingers, because no matter how hard you try to love again, the feeling can never be the same as the first time. The first cut is always deep and though it can eventually turn into an ugly scar, it’s as if it never really healed.
Singer-songwriter Cat Stevens originally wrote, “The First Cut Is the Deepest” in 1967 which he eventually sold to soul singer P.P. Arnold who proceeded to record it in April. Eight months later, Stevens recorded his version of the song as part of his album New Masters.
Over the years, several other artists covered “The First Cut Is the Deepest”, including Rod Stewart in 1977 and Sheryl Crow in 2003. Stewart’s version was among the most popular as it topped the UK Singles Chart for a month, apart from landing at 21st place in Billboard’s Hot 100. The song is included in Stewart’s album A Night on the Town
