Crying in the Rain

When we break down and cry because someone has hurt us, we often don’t want that someone to know that we are in tears. Call it pride or strength of character, but there’s this feeling of self-worth that we try to protect amidst our misery and to achieve that, we try to put up a brave front.

I’ll never let you see

The way my broken heart is hurting me

I’ve got my pride and I know how to hide

All my sorrow and pain

I’ll do my crying in the rain

Yet, at times, the tears can’t be held back but heaven has its own way of sharing in our pain. It brings down the rain that in a strange but comforting fashion, gets to help us hide the heartaches from the sight of everyone.

If I wait for cloudy skies

You won’t know the rain from the tears in my eyes

You’ll never know that I still love you so

Though the heartaches remain

I’ll do my crying in the rain

Still, the truth remains that the rains don’t really take away the heartache. They do, however, afford us the time to pause and to ponder of the things that lie ahead for us. Beautiful things that we are unable to see for now because the tears and the rains somehow keep us in good company,

Rain drops falling from heaven

Could never take away my misery

But since we’re not together

I look for stormy weather

To hide these tears I hope you’ll never see

With that, we look to the future, and when the tears have been dried, we learn to come out and find the courage to move forward. Just as the sun gets to shine after the rain, we get to smile after going through the pain. Until then, we let only the rains receive our cries.

Someday when my crying is done

I’m gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun

I may be a fool but til then darling you’ll never see me complain

I’ll do my crying in the rain

Do you believe that God washes away our tears by sending the rain? Listen to A-ha’s rendition of “Crying in the Rain” and find out if it’s true. Please click here:

Composed by Carole King and originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1962, “Crying in the Rain” has since been covered by various artists. The Everly Brothers’ version landed at sixth spot in Billboard’s Hot 100.

Of all the cover versions made, the one from the Norwegian group A-ha in 1989 proved to be extra special for the band. For starters, their rendition allowed them to become close friends of the Everly Brothers. The latter presented A-ha a guitar set which the band continues to use in their performances.

A-ha’s cover version of “Crying in the Rain” also proved to be the last top 40 hit for the group. It placed 26th in Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Tracks but fared better outside the US, landing at 13th spot in the UK Singles Charts and topping the music category in the band’s hometown of Norway.
