Still

It’s natural for people to come and go in our lives, but sometimes, someone comes along that we strongly feel is the one we’ve been waiting for. So we go out of our way to try and get to know her better, spend time with her, go out on friendly dates. In the process, we create beautiful memories that allow us to imagine living a life with her.

We played the games that people play
We made mistakes along the way
Somehow I know deep in my heart
You needed me

Then the unexpected jolts us to reality. Despite what seemed like a shared feeling, we find her telling us the painful truth that she only sees us as a good friend.

You laughed at me
You said you never needed me
I wonder if you need me now

The feeling of rejection is not something that can be taken lightly. The pain tends to linger even as we often try to continue nurturing that loving feeling and attempt to understand why things turned out the way they did.

Those memories
Times I’m sure we’ll never forget
Those feelings we can’t put aside
For what we had
Sometimes I try to understand
But it’s so heavy on my mind

We think of what might have been and of the many dreams that will never become real. We ponder on the words that we should have said and then we realize that the fun we shared together was at best fleeting because both of us were lost.

So many dreams that flew away
So many words we didn’t say
Two people lost in a storm
Where did we go?
Where’d we go?
Lost what we both had found
You know we let each other down

In the end, we learn to embrace the pain and the loneliness. We hold it out then we lock it up somewhere within us. Yet, deep inside that fragile part of us, we acknowledge her existence and of the special feeling that we continue to keep just for her.

Somehow I know deep in my heart
You needed me
‘Cause I needed you so desperately!
We were too blind to see
But then most of all
I do love You
Still
