The song is about angels, supposedly living in our midst, watching every little thing that we do, and coming in to rescue us during extra dangerous situations. In recent weeks, however, I found its lyrics as well as its message somewhat applicable to my condition as a PWD (person with disability).
PWDs want to be with someone just like other people, but it never comes easy for us. Many PWDs, including myself, would be happy just to have just one significant other, but all that can be offered to us is a brief and fleeting moment.
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
And sooner or later it’s over
I just don’t wanna miss you tonight
When we find that one true love, we’re ready to give up everything. This love is our only happiness, our very own piece of heaven in our lonely spot here on earth.
And I’d give up forever to touch you
‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be
And I don’t want to go home right now
Sadly, in love, we are often wronged and people put the blame on us for playing in this game. We find ourselves crying those endless tears and trying to find truth in the lies told to us. When desperation sets in, we even wish to let the blood flow just to find out if we still have the wIll to escape death.
And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you’re alive
In the end, we simply step back from the world outside. We retreat to our lonely spot where we feel safe and effectively sheltered from the world that we feel that has never understood broken people like PWDs.
And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

It was likewise the number one song in Canada, Italy, and Australia. That same year, “Iris” was voted the most played song in the pop, adult contemporary, and modern rock music categories.
