You have it all planned out. The right words to say have been chosen to perfection. So you reach out for her hand and held her close to you. Yet, as you begin to say those hurting words, you just know that things will not come out the way you had originally planned.
I held her close to me
‘Cause I know she breaks so easily
And then I told her
But I knew no matter how I tried to console her
She’d just do the best she could
But there are times the best is no damn good
You go on to tell her that everything will be alright. In time, she will move on and will eventually come out a better and stronger person. You look at her and the tears in her eyes, and you realize that everything you said are just lies. But a part of you is saying you had to do it to put an end to everything.
I lied and told her she’d be fine
Though we both knew it was just a line
I had to do it
‘Cause I’d a’ said anything to help me get through it
You expect a request from her, a plead, a beg at worst. However, to your great surprise, she managed to come up with a smile despite the pain you brought her. Then a deafening silence followed. A silence you couldn’t handle. You found yourself turning away, because you just realized that contrary to your belief, breaking her heart won’t only hurt her; it will also make you cry.
I thought that she’d break down
But she smiled at me and never made a sound
And I guess she understood in her way
‘Cause her silence told me everything she could not say
When it falls apart
There’s just no easy way
There’s just no easy way
There’s no easy way to break somebody’s heart.
Thinking of telling her goodbye? Why not listen first to James Ingram’s “There’s No Easy Way”? Click here:
“There’s No Easy Way” is from the late James Ingram’s 1983 album It’s Your Night. The song was the seventh track from the album and placed tenth in Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. In the Hot 100 category, “There’s No Easy Way” landed at 58th spot.
Sadly, early last year, James Ingram lost his fight against brain cancer, succumbing to the disease in January. He left the music scene with a good number of great and timeless songs alongside numerous recognitions, including two Grammy awards.
