When we have successfully moved on from a failed relationship, looking back to the past becomes more of a nostalgic ride than anything else. We become more open-minded and in some cases, more apologetic for what we may have done.
We never talked about it
But I hear the blame was mine
I’d call you up to say I’m sorry
But I wouldn’t want to waste your time
Yet, reminiscing about the past leads us to wonder what could have been. We begin to remember the good times as well as the lies that brought us great pain.
‘Cause I love you, but I can’t take any more
There’s a look I can’t describe in your eyes
If we could try, like we tried before
Would you keep on telling me those lies?
It’s this pain that forces us to forget. However, it’s strange that in forgetting, we look forward to a new love, allowing heartaches to become part of our lives once again.
Through all of my life
In spite of all the pain
You know how people are funny sometimes
‘Cause they just can’t wait
To get hurt again
We think of the things that went wrong, the lack of time for one another, doing things that seemed more important, and not saying ‘I love you’ often enough. Yet, when we have begun a new life with someone else, do we get to remember these things?
There was always something more important to do
More important to say
But “I love you” wasn’t one of those things
And now it’s too late
Do you remember?
Tell me, do you remember?… (Do you remember?)
Reminiscing about a lost love? Let Phil Collins’ “Do You Remember?” help you. Click here:
“Do You Remember?” is a 1990 song written and recorded by Phil Collins as part of his album “…But Seriously”. Released as a single, the song captured the top spot of the Adult Contemporary division in the US and Canadian music charts.
In Billboard’s Hot 100, “Do You Remember?” placed fourth, becoming the third song from the “…But Seriously” album to land a spot in the top ten. The other two were “I Wish It Would Rain Down” and “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven”.
The success of “Do You Remember?”, however, was eclipsed by “Another Day in Paradise”, the lead track of the album. The song was number one in Billboard’s Hot 100 and went on to grab Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
