Happy Xmas (War is Over)

It’s Christmas, the time of the year when the world is at peace and people have smiles on their faces. Even for just a single day in a year, we are one in celebrating an occasion considered as the most joyous in the world.

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones

Yes, Christmas is for everyone. It need not matter if you’re black, white, Asians or Caucasians. For thosre who are near us and for those who live far away, the season welcomes them as well.

And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones

And so this is Christmas
I hope you had fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

Yet, when we think about it, Christmas is so much more than just a global celebration. As the late John Lennon suggested in this song, the day is also an opportunity for us to look back at what we have done and what we shoud be doing, both for our fellowman and for Him who is the reason for the celebration.

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

Despite being known as a Christmas song, “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” was originally written as a protest song. Composed by the late John Lennon in 1971 along with wife Yoko Ono, the song was aimed at fighting the Vietnam War and asking for its immediate end.

Shortly before his former band the Beatles broke up, John began showing changes in his songwriting style. The messages were seen as slowly adopting a pacifist nature which continued when John launched a solo singing career and when he formed the Plastic Ono Band with his second wife Yoko.

“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” is one song which carried this so-called pacifist message. Others include “Imagine” and “Let’s Give Peace a Chance”.

“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” is unlike other Christmas songs. Its message is more than just about love. It also espouses peace and equallity even if it’s noticeable that the word Christmas was spelled only as “Xmas”.

Strangely, the official video of this song is somewhat sarcastic in its approach, highlighting the horrors that war spawns with some of the images used a bit graphic. For this reason, discretion as well as an open mind is recommended when watching it. It’s also for this reason that I opted to make use of an alternative video for this blog.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all
