About a week ago, the Philippines hosted the 30th Southeast Asian Games or SEAG. It’s a biennial event aimed at bringing together athletes from countries belonging to the Southeast Asian region to showcase their skills and talents in various sports.
The games were expectedly fun and exciting with several historic records being set. More importantly, it proved that Asians are also world-class athletes despite what some people see as physical inadequacies. As the song “Shooting for the Moon” implied, people will never believe until they are proven wrong.
Who would believe one day
You’d learn to walk on air
Everyone said “No way, you haven’t got a prayer”
Click your heels
That’s how up and happy it feels
Many of the athletes who participated in the SEAG come from poor families. A few may have royal blood, but on the average, the typucal SEAG participant is an ordinary athlete trying to make a name in the sport of his choice and miraculously turning in one solid and incredible performance.
You’ve got the charm
That even wizards can’t explain
How to make rainbows from
A single drop of rain
Who can say?
It’s a trick you learn how to play
It has always been like that. A virtually unknown person will rise to the occasion and show to the world what can be accomplished. The underdog will always have his shot at success one way or the other.
When you’re shooting for the moon
And finally make it
Guess a lucky star is shining on you
The candle on the cake is yours so take it
Make another wish its sure to come true
So if you’re going through a dfficult time in your life, watch an athlete who undergoes rigid training practically every single day of his life. He endures all the pain and tears because he’s holding on to the hope that at the appointed time, everything will change and he will come out on top.
Funny how sometimes life
Just changes overnight
Magically everything you do turns out so right
Just like that
You pull rabbits out of your hat

“Shooting for the Moon” was sung and performed by Amy Holland. Composed by the late Myles Goodman, the song is one of the tracks featured in the 1980 romantic teeanage fantasy movie “Teen Wolf” which starred Michael J. Fox. It’s one beautiful song that sadly never gets played on the radio.
“Shooting for the Moon” is also the last song to be played in the film. It became the perfect backdrop as Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) decides to shed off his werewolf persona and take the free throw shot in the championship basketball game as himself.
The ball went in, allowing Scott and his team to come out as the champion. Prior to all of these, Scott was a teenage loser, until he discovers a dark family secret wherein he can transform into a werewolf at will.
The werewolf side of Scott turned the once teenage loser into an overnight sensation especially when he began showcasing his various talents, including his awesome basketball skills. Eventually, Scott was recruited by the school’s varsity team which he consequently led to the championship.
Unfortunately, the major change in Scott’s life also led him to lose many of the people who loved and accepted him for what he was and not for what he became. In the end, Scott had to choose if he wants to stay as a popular and well-loved teen wolf or return to being an unwanted teenager who has to take his chances at life and in love.
The ending of the movie and the final song that accompanied it provided the answer.
