This is not a condonation of extra-marital affairs but a mere discussion of a reality that has long been existing in our midst. In music, a number of songs have been written about this.
Many of these songs talked about the frustrations of being involved in this illicit relationship and how the act of ending it has always been an available but often a painful option.
You used to tell me we’d run away together
Love gives you the right to be free
You said, “Be patient, just wait a little longer.”
But that’s just an old fantasy — “Saving All My Love for You”
Sometimes, some things happen
That can never be explained
Now, it’s too late for me
I’ve already given you my heart — “I Can’t Say Goodbye To You”
It’s over now, gotta face it one last time
We’ll never make it work, heaven knows we’ve tried
Living this life, holdin’ on for so long
I know it won’t be easy, but it’s time to be strong — “Walk Away”
Considered a minor hit when it was originally sung in 1978 by Marilyn McCoo alongside Billy Davis Jr., “Saving All My Love for You” turned into one blockbuster song after the late Whitney Houston covered it in 1985. Her version hit number one in Billboard’s Hot 100 and gave Whitney her first Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
“I Can’t Say Goodbye to You” is, to date, Helen Reddy’s last hit song. The single was lifted from Reddy’s 1981 album Play Me Out and was at the 88th spot in Billboard’s Hot 100.
“Walk Away” is from Michael Bolton’s fifth album The Hunger which was released in 1987. The song did not hit the music charts but the album was given double platinum certification just three years after its release.
