I was out sick the past week. Lying in bed and with eyes closed, random visions came avisiting, and none of them makes any sense. Then these lines crossed my mind.
All day
Starin’ at the ceilin’, makin’
Friends with shadows on my wall
All night
Hearin’ voices tellin’ me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for somethin’
When you’re not in the proper senses because you’re ill, it’s a bit hard forcing yourself to go to work. When you do, how you feel will often appear in how you look. People tend to notice and stare at you with unnecessary interest.
I’m talkin’ to myself in public
And dodgin’ glances on the train
And I know
I know they’ve all been talkin’ ’bout me
I can hear them whisper
And it makes me think there must be somethin’ wrong
Ultimately, you feel like you’re losing control. Things are spinning around and you begin seeing things coming in to get you.
I’ve been talkin’ in my sleep
Pretty soon they’ll come to get me
Yeah, they’re takin’ me away
Yes, getting seriously sick can sometimes make you feel that you’re going insane. But there’s a difference; if you can still distinguish one from the other, then you’re not crazy. Well, not yet, at least for now.
But I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell
I know right now you can’t tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you’ll see
A different side of me
I’m not crazy, I’m just a little impaired
I know right now you don’t care
But soon enough you’re gonna think of me
And how I used to be
Sick, uneasy, or totally confused in life? It’s not an uncommon feeling. “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty can help you feel alright here:
Rob Thomas, lead vocalist of alternative rock band Matchbox Twenty, wrote “Unwell in 2003. The song was released as the second track from the group’s third album More Than You Think You Are.
“Unwell” ranked first place in two different Billboard music charts, namely the Adult Contemporary Tracks and the Adult Top 40. In the Grammy Awards, it received nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
In an interview, Thomas said the song is not entirely about being crazy, but added that we all feel like that every now and then and is never exclusive to a few.
In another interview, Thomas admitted that “Unwell” is also about coming to terms with who he is. He said he has never been comfortable being in a group, and the song opened the door for him on how to begin accepting this part of himself.
