Foolish Heart

I grew up to the music of the 70s and the 80s. With the latter, the music came to me during my teenage years, that period in life when the most exciting thing that can ever happen to a teenager is falling in love.

Many songs from the 80s talked of both the beauty and the pain of being in love. “Foolish Heart” by Steve Perry is one of those songs and it delivered the message quite clearly.

I need a love that grows
I don’t want it unless I know
That each passin’ hour
Someone, somehow
Will be there, ready to share

Love is a beautiful thing. Yet, it also has an ugly side, and when it comes out, it can leave you feeling like a fool. That experience can be life-changing, causng you to be wary of the risks involved when falling in love.

I need a love that’s strong
I’m so tired of being alone
But will my lonely heart
Play the part
Of the fool again, before I begin

When a new love comes along, old feelings are renewed and the thought of finally being with someone once again becomes an enticing proposition. Still, the heart remembers the pain and asks you not to forget.

Foolish heart, hear me calling
Stop before you start falling
Foolish heart, heed my warning
You’ve been wrong before
Don’t be wrong anymore

Should a new love be welcomed? The feeling can be overwhelming and many times, you just have to give in. Before you do, let your heart be the guide, despite all the foolishness it has to say.

Feeling that feeling again
I’m playing a game I can’t win
Love’s knocking on the door
Of my heart once more
Think I’ll let her in
Before I begin

Is love knocking on the door of your heart again? Listen to what Steve Perry has to say here:

“Foolish Heart” was written and recorded by Stephen Ray Perry, more popularly known as rock singer Steve Perry. Formerly the lead singer of the rock band Journey, Perry launched a successful solo career in the mid-80s. “Foolish Heart” was released as the fourth track from his 1984 debut album entitled Street Talk.

The song captured the 18th spot in Billboard’s Hot 100 and eventually grabbed second place in the Adult Contemporary chart. Several artists have since recorded cover versions of “Foolish Heart”. These included Sharon Bryant, erstwhile lead vocalist of Atlantic Starr in 1989 and pop singer Sheena Easton in 1997.
