I Don’t Like Mondays

For some strange reasons, lots of people don’t like Mondays, myself included. There’s even a term, “Monday sickness”, used to refer to the feeling of difficulty of going to work during this particular day of the week.

In music, several songs have been written about Mondays. “I Don’t Like Mondays” though is special for me because of the melody and the piano playing involved.

Other than that, the song carried an interesting but terrifying message. It talks of what could possibly be going through the minds of some people on any given Monday.

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s gonna make them stay at home

Of course, not everyone understands this strange behavior. On other days, a person looks and acts normally like everyone.

And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was good as gold

If we ever do something unusual on a Monday, a common reason given is because of this dreaded day. Most everybody around us either gets amused or shocked.

And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen
Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat

Still, blaming Monday for anything that goes wrong on this day is hardly a valid reason.

And he can see no reasons
‘Coz there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Until this day, the question remains unanswered. What is it about Mondays that makes things just a bit different, leading us to do things that we otherwise would never do on other days?

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoot the hard day down

Feeling strange on a Monday? Listen to the song here and be reminded that we are always responsible for the things that we do every single day, whether they make sense or simply senseless:

The Irish band The Boomtown Rats sang and recorded “I Don’t Like Mondays” in 1979 and was the first song released from the album The Fine Art of Surfacing. Co-written by lead vocalist Bob Geldof and keyboardist Johnny Fingers, the lyrics of the song were based on an actual and tragic shooting incident that took place in the same year at the San Diego-based Grover Cleveland Elementary School. In that incident, Brenda Spencer, then only 16 years old, opened fire at the school which stood just across her home.

Using a semi-automatic .22-caliber rifle (a Christmas gift from her father), Brenda shot and killed the school’s principal and the school custodian while injuring a policeman and eight schoolchilldren. Asked by a local reporter before surrendering to the police why she did it, Brenda replied, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.”

Brenda was charged for assault with a deadly weapon and murder on two counts. When she reached 18, Brenda was sentenced to 25 years to life imprisonment. The song “I Don’t Like Mondays” meanwhile became a worldwide hit, topping the music charts in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and South Africa. In the US, the song was only at 73rd place in Billboard’s Hot 100, most likelly because the lyrics referred to a tragic incident that took place in the homeland.

Bob Geldof went on to reach greater heights after the “Ii Don’t Like Mondays” composition. In 1984, he co-wrote the best selling single of all-time, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. This song bestowed on Geldof numerou awards such as Man of Peace, Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, among other recognitions.
