Eye in the Sky

Last Wednesday, I got to watch a film entitled “Eye in the Sky”. Briefly, the movie was about the British intelligence doing surveillance work on a suspected terrorist group.

To carry out this spying activity, satellite monitors alongside other advanced equipment were used. These were literally “eye-in-the-sky” tools but we don’t know they exist.

This brought to mind an Alan Parsons Project song which carried the same title. All along, I thought that the song referred to God Almighty. The following lines are quite clear.

I am the eye in the sky
Looking at you
I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules
Dealing with fools

The movie, however, suggested a different but chilling and terrifying interpretation of the phrase “eye in the sky”. With modern technology, the film says governments are now virtual gods. Using undetectable devices, they are fully capable of watching other people and can use their own actions to turn their lives around.

You’ve taken lots of chances before
But I ain’t gonna give anymore
Don’t ask me
That’s how it goes
‘Cause part of me knows what you’re thinking

So the next time you look up the sky, you may want to stop awhile. The idea that there’s more than just one eye watching on every little thing you do is a dark but likely possibility.

I can cheat you blind
And I don’t need to see any more to know that
I can read your mind, I can read your mind
