Summer of ’42

Discovering love in summer is both exciting and unforgettable. This is the message shared by this theme from the movie of the same title.

Released in 1971, the film dealt with a subject considered as intriguing,  if not controversial at the time. Briefly, “Summer of ’42” was about a young teenage boy having his first sexual experience with a woman much older than him, and it happened one memorable summer. Hence, the title.

The movie made quite a stir and enjoyed blockbuster status at the same time. More importantly, it paved the way for other films that looked into the issue of May-December love affairs.

Other than the movie’s story, what made “Summer of ’42” quite memorable is its theme song. Composed by the late Michel Legrand, it blended perfectly with the film as it’s played in the background while the story unfolded.

The theme was awarded “Best Instrumental Composition” at the 14th Grammy Awards held in 1972.
