Heavy metal rock bands have always been known to dish out the hard music stuff. Every now and then, however, these bands come up with a song or two that’s way different from their usual music output.
KISS, a heavy metal rock group from the 70s, did this with “Beth”. It’s a song written by KISS drummer Peter Criss and talks about the travails that band members have to go through when coming up with their songs and how this affects their relationships with the women in their lives.
The song begins with a call from a woman named Beth to her partner/husband (the lyrics were not clear) asking when he’ll come home. The guy responded by saying he can’t go home right away as he and the band are still practicing.
Beth I hear you calling
But I can’t come home right now
Me and the boys are playing
And we just can’t find the sound
Band practices are never time-bound and this often eats up most of the waking hours of the members. The result is usually a shaky relationship, an unhappy marriage, a broken home.
You say you feel so empty
That our house just ain’t our home
I’m always somewhere else
And you’re always there alone
The song is not just about the troubles that “Beth” has to face for staying with a musician. It’s also about the musician trying to keep his woman happy but how he has to sacrifice this to come up with the songa that will hopefully bring food to the family table.
Yet, in the end, it’s the woman who has to make the needed adjustment just to make everything fine.
Beth I know you’re lonely
And I hope you’ll be alright
‘Cause me and the boys will be playing all night
