So many songs have been written about Christmas, but when it comes to celebrating the New Year, there’s only one song that comes to mind – Auld Lang Syne
The song, written by Robert Burns, was originally a Scottish poem when it first came out in 1788 but eventually given the tune similar to many local folk songs. In English, the term has a variety of translations, but the more acceptable ones include “days gone by”, “old long since”, and “long long ago”.
The original Auld Lang Syne has been translated in several languages, but the goal has always been the same – to say goodbye to the old year and to welcome the new. Yet, despite being traditionally known as a New Year song, Auld Lang Syne is also widely used at graduations, funerals, and as a final hymn when ending various occasions.
Interestingly, while Auld Lang Syne enjoys worldwide popularity, not too many people know the song in its entirety. The reason for this is probably because when Auld Lang Syne is sung, only the first and the chorus parts are performed and merely repeated from there.
Still, this shouldn’t really stop you from singing the song. With that, Happy New Year and Welcome 2019.
